Sporting Clays League

United Sportsmen Inc. News article 4-1-2013

United Sportsmen Club will start a sporting clays league this spring. The club has a ten station, fifty target course using fully automatic target throwers. At each station there are two shooting stands with two to three different shooting menus at each stand. The menus instruct the shooter whether the targets are thrown as singles, report pairs, following pairs or true pairs. This gives the shooter a choice of five (5) different shooting presentations at each station. The presentations are meant to provide five different degrees of difficulty that should satisfy the beginner, intermediate and accomplished shooter. When signing up to shoot, the shooter picks the course that matches his or her interest and ability at the time but all 5 courses must be shot for league purposes.

The league will consist of teams of three to a maximum of six shooters. Each week the top three scores from each team will be handicapped and averaged. The league will run for ten consecutive weeks. Team with the best handicapped average overall will be awarded trophies. Shooters will have the option of making up three weeks behind and shooting as many as two weeks ahead. Theoretically a shooter could shoot five weeks on one day that would qualify for league.

Membership in USI is $30 per family per year. Each team will make a one time payment of $25 or $5 if you have no team and regular shooting charges of $12 per round of fifty targets would apply for each participant. Shooters who would like to join the league but do not have a sponsoring team will have their names drawn at random to make up additional teams.

A nice prize will be on display at the clubhouse for 1 lucky PARTICIPANT of the Sporting Clays League to be drawn at the Club party in August.

Those who may be interested but have no experience will have people available  to coach them.

The sporting clays course is open every Saturday 9am till afternoon with lunch served at noon and every Tuesday from 1pm till dark. League rounds can be shot on either day.

League will begin Saturday, May 18th.

USI also has opportunities in trap, skeet, pistol, rifle and archery. USI is located 4 miles north of US2/M95 junction then 1.7 miles east on Sportsman Club road.

Sporting Clays League:    All shooters who complete the 10 week league will be eligible for the drawing.

Beginning date is May 18 (Saturday).  We will continue for 10 consecutive weeks.  Participants can shoot any Saturday (9am and lunch available at noon) or Tuesday (2pm till dark) and can shoot up to 2 weeks ahead and make up as many as 3 weeks in arrears.  Teams can be a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 6 shooters.  Only the top 3 scores from each team will be counted each week and all scores will be handicapped.

Cost is $25 per team plus regular shooting fees for each shooter.  Each shooter must join the club for which the annual membership is $30 per family.  Membership includes 24 hour access to the club’s indoor rifle/pistol shooting range.

The course is a 10 station, 50 target course.  All throwers are automatic so that once a shooter has been introduced to the course and safety rules shooters can shoot the course unassisted.  Each of the 10 stations has 2 different shooting stands and 5 different shooting menus with combinations of single, following pairs, report pairs, true pairs for a full range of relatively easy to progressively more difficult presentations.  The league will involve shooting each of the five courses twice.

There is never a shortage of veteran shooters anxious to share their expertise.

Sign up at the club house Saturday mornings or call Ted 906 282 2422.
