United Sportsmen Inc. News article 4-14-2011

United Sportsmen Club will start a sporting clays league this spring. The club has a ten station, fifty target course using fully automatic target throwers. At each station there are two shooting stands with two to three different shooting menus at each stand. The menus instruct the shooter whether the targets are thrown as singles, report pairs, following pairs or true pairs. This gives the shooter a choice of five different shooting presentations at each station. The presentations are meant to provide five different degrees of difficulty that should satisfy the beginner, intermediate and accomplished shooter. When signing up to shoot, the shooter picks the course that matches his or her interest and ability.

The league will consist of teams of three to a maximum of six shooters. Each week the top three scores from each team will be handicapped and averaged. The league will run for ten consecutive weeks. Team with the best handicapped average overall will be awarded trophies. Shooters will have the option of making up two weeks behind and shooting as many as two weeks ahead. Theoretically a shooter could shoot five weeks on one day that would qualify for league.

Membership in USI is $30 per family per year. Each team will make a one time payment of $25 and regular shooting charges of $10 per round of fifty targets would apply for each participant. Shooters who would like to join the league but do not have a sponsoring team will have their names drawn at random to make up additional teams.

Those who may be interested but have no experience will have people available  to coach them.

The sporting clays course is open every Saturday 9am till afternoon with lunch served at noon and every Tuesday from 1pm till dark. League rounds can be shot on either day.

League will begin Saturday, May 14 but the sporting clays course will be available to shoot Saturday, April 23 weather permitting.

USI also has opportunities in trap, skeet, pistol, rifle and archery. USI is located 4 miles north of US2/M95 junction then 1.7 miles east on Sportsman Club road.

Sporting Clays (shooting)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sporting Clays is a clay pigeon shooting sport. Often described as golf with a shotgun, the sport differs from skeet and trap shooting in that it involves shooting clays at various locations which are launched at different velocities and angles. The original idea behind sporting clays was to create an experience that more closely reflects actual hunting conditions. Whereas top-tier skeet and trap professionals may have hit ratios nearing 100%, the best sporting clay shooters hit their targets only about 85% of the time.

Although the sport is challenging, it is quite popular with novice shooters and ordinary hunters. While professional shooters opt for expensive double-barreled or autoloading shotguns, the game can be equally enjoyed with an inexpensive pump-operated hunting piece. Naturally, safety is paramount. Proper hearing and eye protection is required while on the course.

Course layout and play

A typical course will consist of eight to twelve stations. Varying numbers of clay pairs are shot at each station, with the total shots for an outing adding up to 50 or 100 (two or four boxes of shells, respectively). Advanced shooters have the clays thrown as simultaneous pairs, while novice or intermediate shooters can opt for the clays to be thrown on report (the second clay launched the instant that the shooter fires at the first clay). Clays are thrown at different angles and speeds; sometimes across the shooters view, towards the shooter, or away from the shooter. The shots are intended to simulate hunting for quail, grouse, pheasant, dove, or other game. Many courses have traps which throw clays from tall towers simulating high-flying ducks or geese. Some courses have clays that roll and bounce along the ground to simulate rabbits.
